Neer Dosa with Coconut Chutney

One of the most popular dosa made in southern part of karnataka is neer dosa,literal translation of this would be water dosa:),that s because of the consistency of the  batter used to make this dosa is really so thin that, it s as thin as water. And also the thickness of the dosa is also not much,it has to be made really thin. It s also a very unconventional method of making it,it just has to be splashed on the pa and it takes the shape of the pan. But it s not as simple as it sounds ,it takes years of practise to get it perfect. There s a saying in our place that,the person who can make the perfect neer dosa is a chef of sorts:). As I belong to Mangalore,i grew up watching how this was made at home. But when i ventured into doing it after many years after my marriage ,it was too many trial and errors and finally i think i have mastered it now:)..But if i just put up pics of this ,you might not get it,so i had to make a video of this! Trust me it s one of the tastiest dosas you can make and with just one core ingredient ‘Rice’ . And the best thing it needn t be fermented either…just soak the rice for 30 mins and grind it with water and salt as per your taste to a very fine batter. And you re ready to go! You can either have it with a simple coconut chutney or chicken curry or fish curry…any combination goes well:)


Ingredients:|Preparation Time:40 mins,including soaking and grinding time for rice|


#For Dosa

  • Rice   2 cups(any white /raw rice of your choice soaked for 30 mins)
  • Water  enough to grind into a fine a smooth batter
  • Salt as per taste

Method:|Cooking Time:15 -20 mins|

Wash the soaked rice a couple of times and add adequate water ,add a bit of salt and grind it into a fine and smooth batter ,with a very thin consistency,so as to get a thin dosa ,as shown in the video. Heat the pan you want to make the dosa in. Sprinkle  a few drops of oil and spread it ,now take sufficient amount of the batter in the ladle and splash it on the pan randomly covering the whole pan(as shown in the video), cover it for few seconds,let the flame be on high,open it n check if it s done,there shouldn t be uncooked whiteness of the batter ,then it s ready to be taken out.Fold it in the manner shown in the video.Continue doing this as long as you can get few dosas made to serve. Serve it hot with coconut chutney or chicken curry 🙂

#For the coconut chutney

  • Coconut  1 cup(grated)
  • Onion 1 small(roughly chopped)
  • Ginger  1 inch(cut)
  • Green chillies  2
  • Tamarind  a small piece
  • Mustard seeds 1/4 tspn
  • Red chilli  1 (cut)
  • Curry leaves  a few (finely chopped)
  • Oil  1 tbspn
  • Salt as per taste

Method:|Cooking Time:5 mins|


Grind the grated coconut,onion,ginger,tamarind,green chillies and salt into a fine chutney. Take it out in a bowl. Heat a small deep pan,add the oil,when it s hot add the mustard seeds,when it stops spluttering add the curry leaves and the red chillies,fry it until crisp and mix it with the chutney. Serve it along with neer dosa:)
