Silver Fish Curry


Fish curry and rice ,my all time favourite:)…Today went to the fish market and found some reasonably big silver fish. Was happy to find them as i don t generally find good ones.This fish is good to fry and to make curry.I am sure many people like it to be eaten fried,as this fish when deep fried can be eaten fully with the bones as it becomes really crisp and nice! The fish however is very difficult to clean, as it has scales and it s really tiny but i was lucky the guy in the stall descaled it for me, so half the work was done ,i just needed to get it home and clean it a couple of times  in water and i could straight away cook it:)

Ingredients:|Preparation Time:15 mins|


  • Silver Fish   500 gms(descaled,cut and cleaned)
  • Onion  1 large(finely chopped)
  • Ginger  1 inch(finely chopped)
  • Coriander seeds 1 1/2 tbspn(roasted)
  • Red chillies  5 (roasted)
  • Pepper corn 1/2 tspn(roasted)
  • Tamarind  a little bit
  • Coconut  1 cup(grated)
  • Turmeric 1 tspn
  • Oil   3 tbspn(I used coconut oil,you can use any of your choice)
  • Curry leaves a few finely chopped
  • Salt as per taste

Add 1/2 tspn turmeric and salt as per your taste ,to the cleaned fish and keep it aside.Grind the coconut ,coriander seeds, red chillies,tamarind,pepper corn,remaining turmeric into a fine paste. Take some oil in a pan ,once hot add the chopped onion and garlic into it ,fry it until it turns pink,then add the chopped curry leaves and fry it for a bit . Add the ground paste and salt as per taste,add 1/2 cup of water as well as the paste will be very thick. Cover and let it boil . Open the lid,lower the flame and add the fishes in,cook it exactly for 2 to 3 minutes. Dont over cook as the meat will separate from the bones! Put off the flame and let it rest for a bit before serving.


I like to have fish curry with boiled rice(red rice) and tastes yummm…. you can have it with your choice of rice and try it out:)

*Tip: I generally use rock salt and always grind it along with the masala. Thats one of the reason i cant write a measure for salt and each of us like the proportion of salt to be different. But moderation is better when it comes to salt 🙂
